oh you will LOVE sf!! cow hollow has a bunch of super cute small shops of all kinds...you can find awesome buys in chinatown too, and the absolute best place to eat there is the house of nanking. it is totally amazing! no real menu; you just kind of point to things you want that are on other people's tables :) the alcatraz tour is actually pretty neat. lombard street is fun to see too...but i bet you are like me and would be content just driving around looking at the beautiful victorian homes!! i would skip fisherman's wharf / ghiradelli square - SUPER touristy. also, tartine bakery...OMG fab! have fun!!

Definitely hit the Ferry Building! Incredible food, great supply shopping, and one of my favorite little bakeries, Miette! Super cute and their graham crackers are incredible. The F.B. also had a little company named Pepples that sells fantastic organic/gourmet donuts. Susie Cakes is a fun bakery as well. I'm all about those kinds of places! Enjoy your trip!

The Ferry Building for sure (best food and architecturally stunning)! The Mission District for thrift shopping and the best Mexican food. Hayes valley for the the most adorable and best shopping street. The lake at Golden Gate park for some nature--so beautiful. Have fun!

I lived in SF for 3 years and was most at home among the interior design and clothing boutiques on Union Street (between Van Ness and Steiner), Fillmore (between Broadway and Post), Chestnut (between Fillmore and Divisadero) and of course, Sacramento (between Broderick and Lyon).

Enjoy!

I only ran 26.2 miles there and then couldn't walk so just took a limo to the vineyards...highly recommend that!:) Megan

I also agree on the Ferry Building. You should also trek out to the Mission and eat breakfast at Tartine. they have amazing pastries. I always stock up before I leave!

I love shopping on Fillmore Street. Have lunch at La Boulange Bakery - 2043 Fillmore St. Yummy little french bakery! A must is to stop by Jeremy's Department Store located at 2 South Park (on 2nd between Brannon and Bryant)(www.jeremys.com). Then wonder through the Park "South Park". Wonderful little restaurants in an urban park setting. Go down a few blocks and to see AT&T Park where the Giants play (another must see!) Walk The Embarcadero for a gorgeous view of the bay and the Bay Bridge - on your way to the Ferry Building! Enjoy!

Oh you will love San Francisco! It's very neat! I went about 10 years ago, so I can't really remember any good food places or shops but I do have a suggestion. Across, the bridge is the neatest town called Carmel. I love loved this place! They have these cool homes with names such as Hazel and gretel and so fourth...the neatest cottages I have ever seen! I even have a section my blog about Carmel's homes! Also, it has a beach and the town has no stop lights or fast food places. I believe I liked it better there than SF! Carmel's really close- just right over the bridge....I highly recommend you check it out!! Look it up online too if you want to make sure its something you would probably like to do before you go!

make a reservation at the Slanted Door. Amazing food.
You gotta head over to Alcatraz for the audio tour. so amazing and interesting. just the ferry ride over is a neat expierence. Think it is called the blue and gold fleet that takes you over. Also head over to Chinatown. The entrance into it has these great foo dogs.

A wonderful (real, as in straight out of France) creperie called Ti Couz, it's amazing!

SF is the best but I am biased b/c I live in the bay area :) I would have to agree with the folks who said the ferry building. Somewhat touristy but not anything like pier 39 (which I think you could skip easily and not miss anything)the farmers market there is very cool. I agree about house of nanking in chinatown as well. Also if you want a more loacl version of chinatown hit up clemente street b/c they have the same shops at cheaper prices. I would also highly rec. going to haight and ashbury b/c of the great shops down there and the feel of the area. Also if you can make it to the store "crossroads" its an awesome consignment shop. there is one over on irving by golden gate park (which is a def. must see!)and one in the castro area (i think) Enjoy your trip and make sure you pack lots of layers... SF is chilly this time of year!

Have lunch at Nob Hill Cafe - literally had the BEST pizza and pasta there of my life!

Also I know it has been mentioned but the Ferry Building is amazing - it is like the world's best farmers market that is open every day.

One more restaurant - Yank Sing is the BEST chinese dim sum restaurant ever and is the most amazing experience.

Have a BLAST!

Gosh - where oh where to begin???

Interior design shops are fab along Hayes Valley - check out Room Service and Cisco... lunch at Bar Jules and drinks at Absinthe... Nancy Boy is also lovely.

Mission and Valencia Streets are up and coming areas too for design and eating... I love the store Monument on Valencia - gorgeous furniture and for eats you have to go to Foreign Cinema - at 9pm they show an outdoor foreign movie - food is delish and it's a stylish crowd. Andalu is also one of my faves - California tapas.

Another secret haunt is Nihon (great in the week for happy hour cocktails and half price sushi).

I have loads more suggestions if you need them. Just let me know.

Have fun in this beautiful City.

I absolutely loved Paxton Gate on Valencia in the Mission District when I was there. There are a couple really cool furniture shops on that street and in the area too that you will love.
